Editors' Take
It's a little slice of homegrown LA culture at the Peterson, but don't go all GTA and try to drive one out, now.
MTV’s “Pimp My Ride,” has nothing on the cultural and creative complexity of a lowrider’s history. MTV does it for ratings, but your average Jose or Jerome hook up their cars because it’s natural, because it’s artistic, because they can represent themselves with pride. Actually, that’s what encouraged visual artist, Vincent Valdez to create the exhibition, La Vida Lowrider: Cruising the City of Angels, hosted by the Peterson Automotive Museum, Oct. 27, 2007-June 8, 2008. Visitors will get to look at the history of the lowriders starting from the “bombs”-- (American-cars dating back to the late 1930s to the early 1950s) -- to the “Euros” (imported cars such as Honda and Acura)--to the advancement of how far “tricking” out a car has become in Los Angeles.
