CHAZ BOJORQUEZ
As a boy in the 1950's
Chaz Bojorquez experienced "
placas", the graffiti tradition of Mexican-Americans living in
East Los Angeles. Dating back to at least the mid-1930's,
Placas (or plaques) were much like a
role call, symbols of territorial street boundaries and pledges of
allegiance to one's neighborhood.
Not a gang member himself, he started his career tagging in the
L.A. riverbed. He is acknowledged as one of the first modern writers to take
graffiti out of the '
gang' context and into a
mural/art context.
A
master calligrapher, he is world renowned for his development of the
old English based font known as
West Coast "Cholo" style writing. His zoot-suited skull icon, inspired by Mexican folk art and the
Aztec tradition, is known as
Senõr Suerte (Mr. Luck) and has been adopted by individuals as a gangster image of
protection from death. His work has been exhibited throughout the
world and hangs in top museums including the
Smithsonian and
The Los Angeles Museum of Art.
After more than decade of
tagging in the streets in the
1970's and early
1980's he came to a deeper need to understand the motivations behind this
modern art form. In
1979 he embarked on a 3 year round-the-world journey, visiting
35 countries to study how graphics and letters describe culture. This
exploration led him to ask:
Does graffiti art have intent,
purpose, cultural identity, history and unity?
Who owns the public space and who has the right to speak and be
heard?. |

POSE II IS MR. MAXX MOSES
As an original member of the world famous
FX CREW, one of the
most recognized groups of international graffiti artists in the world,
Pose has propelled his style and influence outside the stars and
stripes of the United States.
Amsterdam, Belgium, Paris and Japan have all been blessed with murals and exhibitions from this deep
brother. A "prophet of self-education", he describes his mission
as, "to change the negative point of view held by critics who lack
any real insight about graffiti and the impact it has on the
world."
In 1976 he adopted the tag
Pose II and graffiti art became the cornerstone of his style.
Pose II presently co-owns and operates an art gallery "
Living In Perfect Style" where international artists and designers are featured. He is
part of the
Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, which holds the record for the most murals painted in any city
throughout the world.
The original Members of the
FX Crew are
Per One, Pose II, Cope II, King Bee, Nomad, Serve, T-Kid. They were the first to start spraying on the school yard in
Webster Ave. within the
Bronx.
Pose II and Per One came up with the Name
FX standing for
effects. There was no leader within the crew so that new members were
accepted by a democratic vote. Criteria such as name recognition
and personality were most relevant. Over the course of the
next 2 to 3 years more writers were accepted to join. At around
1994 the crew consisted of the following members:
Per One, Pose II, T-Kid, Cope II, Ces, Clark, Snow, Sub, Poem, King
Bee, Serve. In the summer of
1996,
Daim and Hesh came to
New York and were introduced to the
FX Crew by
Poem before being accepted as members just as
Loomit had been affiliated with the crew by
Poem even before that. In
2002 Peeta from
Italy and
Duck from
Belgium joined. |

MEAR ONE (33THIRD RESIDENT ARTIST)
Our Monthly Resident Artist Mear One is one of the legendary figures of Los Angeles graffiti
culture, famously known for his often-political street graffiti
art. Commonly referred to as the '
Michelangelo' of graffiti,
Mear One is commonly associated with
CBS (Can't Be Stopped - City Bomb Squad) and
WCA (West Coast Artist) crews. As a graphic designer,
Mear One has designed apparel for
Conart, Kaotic, as well as his own
Reform brand.
Mear One has done album covers for artists like
Limp Bizkit, Busdriver and
Daddy Kev.
In 2004,
Mear One joined artists
Shepard Fairey and
Robbie Conal to create a series of "anti-war, anti-Bush" posters for a street
art campaign called "
Be the Revolution" for the art collective
Post Gen. Together they placed more than 1,500 politically charged
posters around Los Angeles, "
kicking the political-street-art scene into overdrive."
Mear One believes that if there is no dialogue, then the painting has lost
its purpose and only serves those who can afford to mix art and
leisure. Instead, he creates art that serves the people.
Growing up poor in
Hollywood, being bused from one broken neighborhood to another, shaped
Mear One's vision allowing him to witness a wide range of graffiti and urban
murals. The public nature of graffiti immediately captivated him
because it created a place where he found acceptance by
rebelliously expressing himself, and he became a member of the
infamous
CBS (Can't Be Stopped) Crew. Today his graffiti and fine art continues to illuminate his
dissattification with big business, war for profit and injustice in
society. |

CHORBOOGIE
Though
Chor Boogie uses spray cans to create his art, he insists that he is worlds
away from his days of tagging for street cred-whether or not that
stance appeals to the hipsters who view his art. He describes the
evolution as a movement away from vandalism to the fine arts of
aerosol, a world that creates rather than diminishes, proposing a
positive approach to the world rather than a negative one. Never a
letter form man,
Chor Boogie's characters range from soulful, deftly shaded portraits to happy,
smiley flowers, with geometric elements adding up to half-hidden
faces, and a huge eyeball or two to encourage you to see.
Chor Boogie has stated that there is spiritual love for what I do, an approach
based more in feelings than in thought. There is no color he
doesn't use, he says, as he creates a wide range of forms using an
inverted spray can technique, which slows the pressure of the paint
and creates denser, richer tones. And though it would seem that not
limiting his color palette could result in an almost violent
barrage of hues and forms-within-forms,
Chor Boogie has developed a sense of order in his layers of work. |

FRAME
Frame started writing graffiti in the fall of
1983 and continues to paint to this day. Although not as active as he
once was in the streets, he believes that to be seen as a
graffiti writer, he still needs to be out there in the trenches from time to time
to keep things real for himself.
Frame started out with some of the most influential writers back in the
early days such as
Charlie from the
Down To Kill crew (DTK), Dream (SMD), Crime aka Rick One from the
Los Angeles Bomb Squad and founder of Kill To Succeed crew (K2S),
Defer K2S, Prime K2S, Miner of the West Coast Artists (WCA), Risky
WCA, Chase of the Under Cover Artists (UCA), and Geo One of Todays
Writing Artists (TWA).
In
1988 Frame started painting with
Charlie DTK and the both of them started a campaign of train, freeway, and
yard painting through out the
Los Angeles area and by
1990 they were producing about
500 pieces a year between the both of them.
Also in
1988 Frame along with help of several others started organizing the first of
several
Graffiti Art events of it's kind in
Los Angeles. The
"Los Angeles Graffiti Art Expo" was a huge success and eventually the event grew to over 3000
attendees by
1993. Writers and artists from all over the world made it a yearly
event to attend.
Currently
Frame now organizes a similar annual event now called the
"West Coast Graffiti Party" and since the first one back in
2006, the event is growing and soon will become the largest event of
its kind in the
Los Angeles area. Plans for
WCGP 2008 are in the works now. | |
