Man is many things, and according to Ericailcane, the provocative Italian street artist, Man Is The Bastard. The New Year sees Ericailcane exhibit his first LA solo show at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art. The exhibition (January 11th – January 28th, 2009), entitled, "Man Is The Bastard", is a collection of etchings and graphic art of domestic animals, set in an alternative universe where they have taken revenge against mankind. Ericailcane's work has conscious social and political elements and his style has distinct, macabre yet humorous imagery.

"We have been following Ericailcane's work for some time and are continually astounded by both the innovation and the simplicity of what he does. From his immense outdoor murals to his intricate drawings and mixed media pieces, no matter his medium, Ericailcane draws you into a quiet, whimsical, almost fairytale world that recalls a time that has long passed by and yet never really existed to begin with. Perhaps the most compelling, unique aspect of his work is the voice that emerges from his anthropomorphic subjects - at first they appear to be otherwise engaged and quite unaware that they and their actions have been put on display, but there is a longing and loneliness that connects them to the human world." Elisa Carmichael (Co-Owner, Carmichael Gallery)

Ericailcane is a well-regarded artist across Europe for his murals and graffiti and belongs to a collective of artists known for their disparate artistic language styles. He studied at the academy of Arts in Bologna and has exhibited various works including sculptures, paintings, video and installations. He has shown at numerous successful group shows such as Spina Festival (2005), Santa's Ghetto (2006) & Sound Zero (Sept 2006 – Jan 2007). A published book by the artist is also available entitled, "Il Burlo".

About Carmichael Gallery:

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is fast gaining recognition as one of the major exhibitors of emerging international contemporary art on the US West Coast. After several years of organizing shows and private events, co-curators Seth and Elisa Carmichael opened Carmichael Gallery as a fresh alternative voice on the Los Angeles gallery scene. Artists who have showcased their work at the LA–based gallery are becoming widely recognized by the art world establishment with institutions such as the Tate Modern as well as Christie’s, Phillips Du Pury, and Bonhams auction houses supporting their careers. Artists are beginning to view shows at Carmichael Gallery as a rite of passage and an integral part of future successes in New York, London, and around the world – and collectors are taking notice.

Carmichael Gallery is located at 1257 N. La Brea Avenue, on the SW corner of La Brea and Fountain, West Hollywood, CA 90038.
